Volunteer Archive Assistant

At The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), we're passionate about our mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS volunteers help carry out this mission in many ways: supporting patients, families and healthcare professionals, funding cutting edge research and driving policies to help patients access lifesaving treatments.

Additional Position Information

Position SummaryReporting to LLS' Archivist, the Archive Assistant provides assistance in organizing original records, documents, photography, films and artifacts for permanent preservation in the LLS Archive located at the LLS national headquarters. The outcomes of this role serve our mission by helping to preserve LLS history and incorporating it in impactful ways into our current revenue and awareness initiatives. Location Rye Brook, NY / LLS National OfficeTime Commitment September to December, 2017 / four to five hours per weekThe assignment might extend beyond December, depending on the amount of archival records to be located and processed. A flexible schedule is available, based on mutually agreed upon times. Work must be completed during business hours (8:00 am to 5:00 pm).

Responsibilities

The position requires the volunteer to perform archival tasks, including:

  • Safe intake and processing of materials (e.g., remove metal fasteners and other damaging materials from original paper and photographic records).
  • Create and place documents and records into acid-free (archival) file folders and boxes.
  • Label and organize file folders and boxes for easy review and access (e.g., chronologically or alphabetically).
  • Research missing caption information of original photographs.
  • Use Microsoft Word and Excel to create documents describing archival collections.
  • Maintain orderly storage area.

Qualifications


Volunteer should possess the following skills/qualifications:
• High School diploma required; college degree preferred (BA or BS degree)
• Legible hand-writing and excellent attention to detail
• Excellent organizational skills to handle and organize a diversity and high volume of paper records, photography and other materials
• Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and online data searching via Google
• Interest in history is a plus
